UCLA-NSF Workshop: Food-Energy-Water Nexus in California

UCLA Civil and Environmental Engineering Associate Professor Mekonnen Gebremichael chairs this free three-day workshop where top researchers and policymakers in fields including agriculture, energy, water, climate change, economics and public policy will gather at UCLA to address the major threats to and potential solutions for California’s food, energy and water systems.

  • Are we using Food, Energy and Water (FEW) resources sustainably, given current demands and the changing climate?
  • Is our FEW infrastructure efficient and sustainable?
  • Can we reduce energy use in FEW production and delivery?
  • Does California have the laws and institutions to move towards more integrated FEW production and distribution?
  • What technology exists to improve efficiency, sustainability and integration of FEW production and distribution?
  • What advances have producers and distributors made?  What can government do differently to maximize sustainability?
  • How do we minimize waste products and maximize reuse and recycling in FEW production, distribution and consumption?
