IMG_6196Students enrolled in Civil and Environmental Engineering (C&EE) 157L, Hydrologic Analysis, IMG_1325 learn from professional USGS hydrologists how to measure river discharge. The pictures (left) show how the stream velocity is measured using mechanical current meters and acoustic dobbler current profilers (ADCPs).

In addition, students are provided with the opportunity collect field data on soil hydraulic properties in the Santa Clara Watershed (right). Students tested different soil textures, soil moisture content, soil temperatures and infiltration rates in order to understand hydrological dynamics in this area and compare the data with a hydrological model set up in class.
