We’re proud to announce that our very own Professor Sanjay Mohanty, of the Civil and Environmental Engineering department, has been featured in a recent article by EdSource exploring health and safety risks in fire-prone zones. The article highlights how thousands of California students attend schools located in “High” or “Very High” fire-hazard severity zones, and it includes expert commentary on the importance of proactive safety planning and facility “hardening.”
Professor Mohanty contributed insights on his research into soil testing and air-quality impacts of wildfire smoke in school environments and emphasized the need for educational institutions to adopt longer-term strategies for mitigating fire-related risks.
