Infrastructure Related to Buildings

Emily M. Guglielmo, SE, PE, CE
Principal, Martin/Martin, Inc.

Nearly every part of the built environment replies on structure to help fulfill its function.  Structural engineers design the buildings where we live, work, go to school, and play.  They utilize materials such as steel, concrete, masonry, and wood.  Can the structure withstand a hurricane?  Will it crumble if there’s too much snow on the roof?  Will it withstand a major earthquake?  How may the building perform under a terrorist attack?  Structural engineers consider all these questions and more to create buildings that are safe for the public.

This seminar will introduce civil engineering students to structural engineering, specifically the infrastructure of buildings.  Topics to be addressed include:

  • Role of Building Infrastructure in the Community
  • Basics of Building Design, Including Horizontal and Vertical Design Loads and Material Properties
  • Building Codes and Related Agencies
  • Educational Requirements and Licensure
  • Opportunities in the Profession and Economic Climate

Emily Guglielmo, earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from UCLA, and her Master’s Degree in Structural Engineering from UC Berkeley.  She began her career with Martin/Martin, Inc. in their Denver, CO area office and is currently a Principal with the firm, managing their San Francisco Bay Area office.  She has lectured on wind and seismic provisions across the nation.  Emily is the secretary of the NCSEA Wind Engineering Committee and serves on the ASCE 7 seismic committee.  A licensed SE, Emily has received a number of awards, including SEI Fellow and the Susan M. Frey NCSEA Educator Award, for effective instruction for practicing structural engineers.
