Abstract: The 1994 Northridge earthquake caused widespread damage to steel moment‐resisting frames including brittle fractures of beam‐to‐column welded moment connections. To improve the behavior of moment resisting connections, the SidePlate connection was designed and began to market as an alternative moment connection. Most recently an innovative special moment frame connection using the SidePlate moment connection technology was developed and tested at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) accordance to AISC‐341 Seismic Provisions. This connection only requires field bolting and comes in three configurations as shown below. The tested connections enveloped wide‐flange, HSS and BU‐Box columns and beams ranging from W21x73 to W40x397. In this seminar an introduction to the seismic design philosophy will be given and the results of the full‐scale tests as well as the finite element simulations will be reviewed.
