Jiann-Wen “Woody” Ju, professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has received the Lifetime Achievement Medal at the Third International Conference on Damage Mechanics (ICDM3) held in July, 2018 at Tongji University in Shanghai.

The conference, which is held every three years, honored Prof. Ju for more than 20 years of distinguished and prominent achievements in the field of damage mechanics — the study of how small defects in materials occur, and how they affect a material’s performance. Ju uses computational and experimental techniques to model damage mechanics in a broad range of materials, in particular for construction. He was also a plenary speaker at the conference, speaking on advances in pavement materials that could repair themselves.
