Statement of Research Interest

Control of trace contaminants in drinking water; compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act and all related regulations; occurrence, chemistry, and control ofdisinfection by-products; management of trace organic analysis method development; identification and control of tastes and odors in water supplies; development and application of sensory analytical methods to drinking water; removal of trace organic compounds using granular activated carbon, ozone, Peroxone, aeration, and anionic exchange resins; control of asbestos fibers in water; optimization of water treatment processes; application of alternate disinfection strategies in water distribution systems (chlorine, chloramines); control of water quality in distributions systems especially nitrification caused by chloramine use; control of corrosion in water distribution systems.  Treatment of groundwater for the following contaminants:  MTBE, volatile organic chemicals, hexavalent chromium, perchlorate and nitrate.  Water resources:  optimization of use of surface water and groundwater resources and compatibility of desalinated seawater with distribution materials.  History of technology:  history of filtration and disinfection of public water supplies.
