Dr. Marshall Lew, Principal & Vice President, Amec Foster Wheeler Environment & Infrastructure, LA presents ‘The Wilshire Grand – A Grand Geotechnical Project’.
The Wilshire Grand project, dominated by a new 71-story office/hotel tower, is currently under construction in Downtown Los Angeles. In 2017 it will open as the tallest building in Los Angeles and west of Chicago. The Wilshire Grand was a complex geotechnical project that involved many unusual aspects due to its location and the size of the development: the substructure extends 5 levels below the lowest street grade, but there is a 37 foot difference in elevation across the site; the Metro Red/Purple Lines subway tunnels lie under 7th Street within a distance of just 6 feet south of the project at its closest location. Dr. Lew will discuss the challenges presented and approaches used to overcome them.
