We are proud to announce that CEE’s Distinguished Professor John Wallace has been awarded with the Mete A. Sozen Award for Excellence in Structural Research by the American Concrete Institute (ACI). This honor recognizes a coauthored paper that makes a significant contribution to the advancement of structural engineering.

The award-winning paper, titled “New Equations to Estimate Reinforced Concrete Wall Shear Strength Derived from Machine Learning and Statistical Methods,” was published in the January 2024 issue of the ACI Structural Journal (pp. 89–104). The research introduces a novel methodology that applies machine learning and statistical tools to develop more accurate equations for estimating the shear strength of reinforced concrete walls—enhancing both the design process and structural safety.

The award will be formally recognized at the ACI Fall 2025 Concrete Convention during the “Paper Awards Presentation Session: Published in 2024” and will take place on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Hilton Baltimore Inner Harbor Hotel in Baltimore, Maryland. This session celebrates the year’s most impactful papers and offers authors the opportunity to present their research to the broader structural engineering community.

We extend our warmest congratulations to Professor John Wallace on this well-deserved recognition. This achievement reflects not only the excellence of the research but also its lasting impact on the field of structural engineering.
