Dr. Saman A. Abdullah, a postdoctoral scholar under civil and environmental engineering professor John Wallace, was awarded the prestigious American Concrete Institute (ACI) Young Member Award for Professional Achievement. The honor was given at their 2022 Spring Convention in Orlando, Florida.

The award was given to Dr. Abdullah, “For contributions to advancing the design and evaluation of concrete buildings that include structural walls and coupling beams for lateral-force resistance.”

Dr. Abdullah has been an active member of ACI since 2017, where he serves as an active voting member for a number of ACI committees and subcommittees, including: ACI Committee 374 (Performance-Based Seismic Design of Concrete Buildings), ACI Subcommittee 318-H (Seismic Provisions), ACI Subcommittee 318-W (Wind Provisions), ACI Subcommittee 369-F (Retrofit), and ACI 374B (Functional Recovery). He also actively participates in the development of ACI codes, standards, and guidelines. His research interests include seismic and wind design of concrete structures, behavior of tall buildings, and laboratory testing.

The award, established in 1997, recognizes the contributions of younger members of the Institute for professional achievement. Awardees are chosen based on their participation in the local and national/ international levels of the Institute, service to the advancement of the industry, and the mentoring of students and other young professionals. Other merits are also considered, especially those that promote the Institute’s objectives.

Since its establishment in 1904, the American Concrete Institute has been a leading authority and resource worldwide for everything involving concrete design, construction and materials.
