Gaurav Sant is set to receive the Walter L. Huber Civil Engineering Research Prize for 2022. The award is being given by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) for “his pioneering work in decarbonization of cement and concrete through novel carbonated binding systems.”

Sant is also the director of the Institute for Carbon Management, a pioneer in the research and development of technologies that aim to reduce carbon emissions. Sant was also recently appointed as the inaugural Pritzker Chair of Sustainability at UCLA.

Since 1949, the Walter L. Huber Civil Engineering Research Prize has been given annually to younger members of the ASCE that have notable achievements in research related to civil engineering. Recipients of the award did not only impact their subdisciplines with their research, but also the entire field of civil engineering.

The awards were endowed by Alberta Reed Huber in 1964 in honor of her husband, Walter L. Huber. Huber was an engineer, mountaineer, and conservationist who focused on structural, hydroelectric, and irrigation projects. He was a founder and partner at the engineering firm Huber and Knapik in San Francisco, California. During the 1950s, Huber was president of the ASCE.

Sant joins the long list of current UCLA Civil and Environmental Engineering faculty that received the prestigious award, namely: Shaily Mahendra (2019), Scott Brandenberg (2015), Eric Hoek (2011), Ertugrul Taciroglu (2011), Jonathan Stewart (2008), Jiann-Wen Woody Ju (1997), Dennis Lettenmaier (1990), Michael Stenstrom (1989), Keith Stolzenbach (1979).
