CEE 200-2 Seminar: Brandon Winfrey, Postdoctoral Scholar at UCLA will present, “Plant Ecology in Green Stormwater Infrastructure”

Brandon Winfrey, Postdoctoral Scholar at UCLA presents: “Plant Ecology in Green Stormwater Infrastructure”.

Abstract:
Green infrastructure is part of the built environment that incorporates ecological aspects into its design. Stormwater runoff is a major concern for cities globally, with many problems arising from the profound departure from the pre-development flow regime (a.k.a., the Urban Stream Syndrome). The stormwater biofilter (also called rain garden, bioretention system, and bioswale) is a promising approach used to manage urban stormwater runoff using planted filter media to capture, treat, and either infiltrate or release stormwater runoff. Some benefits of biofilters include flood prevention, water quality improvement, and wildlife habitat provision. Understanding how plant communities develop, what roles plants have in biofilter function, and which plants are most suitable for biofilters are topics of research much needed to improve our understanding of biofilter benefits and optimal design.

This talk covers recent research in Professor Rich Ambrose’s lab group aimed at understanding these key ecological aspects of stormwater biofilters.

Biography:
Brandon Winfrey is a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences in the Field School of Public Health at UCLA. With his supervisor, Professor Richard Ambrose, Dr. Winfrey is investigating key ecological aspects of stormwater biofilters in Australia and Southern California. Dr. Winfrey has a BS in Environmental Engineering from The University of Oklahoma, a MS in Environmental Engineering from Stanford University, and earned his PhD in Environmental Science and Technology from The University of Maryland, where he studied evaluation of ecologically engineered systems using systems ecology principles.
