Abstract: Before too long, you will be graduating from UCLA. You will be ready to make an impact as soon as you land a position in the industry. Are you ready for a world filled with new challenges and opportunities? Now you will have to deal with licensure and standard of care. Partial credit no longer applies. You will be working with clients, contractors, architects, and other engineers. You will have to be aware of profit and earnings, career goals, human resources, professional development, and so much more. Gain insights into these aspects of being a practicing engineer in today’s world. Ask the questions that you have always wondered about but never had the chance to ask.

Bio: Matt Barnard, S.E is a Principal and Engineering Manager with the Los Angeles office of Degenkolb Engineers. He has been with the firm since he graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2001. Matt specializes in healthcare, higher education, and seismic retrofit projects. He is the structural engineer of record of Kaiser’s Los Angeles Medical Center Hospital and the Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center Ocean View Tower. He is currently in the midst of various projects including the potential improvements to the NPI Building at UCLA and the assessment of nearly 200 buildings at UCSB.

Matt is very active in the Southern California professional community. He is serving as the 2018/2019 Treasurer with the Structural Engineers Association of Southern California and on the steering committee for the LA Mayor’s Building Forward LA initiative. Matt has served on the ACE Mentoring Board and was named a National Mentor of the Year in 2015. He is also a volunteer with the Cal OES Safety Assessment Program having been deployed to New Orleans and St. Bernard Parish after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
