Seminar Speaker: Todd Bradford, PE and Bahareh Heidarzadeh, PhD, PE – LA Metro Purple Line Extension: A Design Case Study

ABSTRACT

The Westside Purple Line Extension program, Sections 1 through 3, will extend the heavy rail subway system westward from the current terminus at Wilshire / Western, approximately nine miles with seven new stations. The Westside Purple Line Extension is scheduled to be designed and built in three sections. Extension Sections 1 through 3 will provide a high-capacity, high-speed, dependable alternative for those traveling to and from Los Angeles’s “second downtown,” including destinations such as Miracle Mile, Beverly Hills, Century City and Westwood. ENGEO is the Engineer of Record on Sections 2 and 3 for the geotechnical instrumentation design and structure impact assessments for the support of excavation designs for the 4 associated stations as well as the Section 3 tail track shaft. Section 2, extends from the west end of Section 1 to Wilshire / Rodeo Station and then to Century City/Constellation Station which is currently under construction. Section 3 extends west from the end of Section 2 to Westwood/UCLA Station and then to Westwood / VA Hospital Station. The tunnel alignment passes through densely populated areas with structures ranging from single-family homes to high-rise office buildings, as well passing beneath the I-405 freeway and heavily travelled city streets, involving numerous third-party stakeholders. The presentation will provide an overview of the project, demonstrate our analysis methods, and discuss possible mitigation measures.

BIOGRAPHY

Todd joined ENGEO in 2015 following his graduation from the University of California, Berkeley with a Master of Science in Engineering degree (Geosystems program). He has experience in designing and managing multi-use urban infill projects, high-rise buildings, excavation shoring, shoreline re-development, and brownfield redevelopment projects. His work on various projects includes geotechnical explorations, liquefaction analysis, consolidation settlement analysis and surcharging, site-specific site response, seismic shoreline stability and retrofit, temporary shoring, and static and seismic slope stability analysis. Todd provides consultation to building owners, residential and commercial developers, and land planners to develop practical solutions to engineering and non-engineering challenges.

Bahareh joined ENGEO in 2016 following her graduation from the University of California, Los Angeles with a Doctor of Philosophy in Civil Engineering. She specializes in complex geotechnical explorations, foundation design, seismic design and retrofit, and finite element analysis. She has worked on many high-profile projects throughout California including Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, Oakland Athletics’ Stadium, and Treasure Island Redevelopment.
