Seminar Speaker: Tom Iseley, Ph.D., P.E., Dist. M. ASME, PWAM – Advancing the Science and Practice of Underground Infrastructure

Speaker: Tom Iseley, Ph.D., P.E., Dist. M. ASME, PWAM
Affiliation: Professor of Engineering Practice, Beavers Heavy Construction Distinguished Fellow, Construction Engineering and Management, Purdue University

ABSTRACT

This presentation will describe the establishment and development of the trenchless technology industry including the formation of the Trenchless Technology Center (TTC) at Louisiana Tech University and the North American Society of TT (NASTT).  The family of trenchless technical solution will be presented and discussed briefly with a focus on how to increase the likelihood of successful underground infrastructure projects.  This presentation will describe how having the most advanced technical solutions for locating and mapping existing underground utilities, having the best pipeline condition assessment technologies, and the most advanced trenchless technical solutions is not enough.  It is essential that a risk-based asset management program be developed and implemented to ensure that the right solutions have been selected for the right application at the right time.  This presentation will describe the development of the water asset program.

BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Iseley has over 40 years of experience in the planning, design, and construction of underground infrastructure systems.  Since 1982, he has served on the faculty of Mississippi State University, Purdue University, Louisiana Tech University, and as chairman of the department of Construction Technology at the Purdue University School of Engineering and Technology in Indianapolis (IUPUI).  In 1989, Dr. Iseley established the Trenchless Technology Center (TTC) at Louisiana Tech University.  He is a founding director of the North American Society for Trenchless Technology (NASTT).  Dr. Iseley was elected to the Class of 2016 of the National Academy of Construction (NAC).  In April 2015, he was selected as a Distinguished Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) for his eminence in engineering.  Dr. Iseley was inducted into the 2017 NASTT Hall of Fame.  He holds a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering and an M.B.A. degree from the University of Alabama in Birmingham and a Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering from Purdue University.
